TORONTO — Home plate umpire Dale Scott sustained a concussion after taking a foul tip off the facemask in the eighth inning of Friday's game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles at Rogers Centre.
Scott fell to the ground after Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo fouled off a Ryan Tepera pitch that appeared to catch the veteran umpire near the chin.
The mask went flying off and Scott staggered to his hands and knees before receiving medical attention.
He did not appear to lose consciousness. A spinal board was used to support Scott and he was transported off the field on a golf cart.
Major League Baseball confirmed the head injury via a Blue Jays spokesman, who added that Scott would not return to the field for the rest of the weekend series. He will continue to be evaluated at a downtown hospital.
"He's one of the good guys, you know," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "He works hard. Umpires are vulnerable too out there, just like a catcher."
The game was delayed for about 10 minutes after the incident. Second base umpire Brian Knight took over behind the plate.
The Orioles went on to post a 6-4 victory.
