THUNDER BAY – Rob DeGagne and the Thunder Bay North Stars have parted ways.

DeGagne, who coached the Superior International Junior Hockey League team for seven seasons, said it was a touch decision to step down from behind the bench.

But he’s not going far.

“While I’m stepping away from the bench, I’m not stepping away from the North Stars. I’ll be staying on as a senior hockey advisor and will continue to support this organization in any way I can as we pursue another SIJHL championship for Thunder Bay.”

DeGagne took over the team in 2017-18 and was named coach of the year, leading the club to back-to-back regular season titles in 2019 and 2020, and a spot at the Dudley Hewitt Cup in 2019, after capturing the Bill Salonen Cup.

“Rob has been more than just a coach – he’s been a leader, a mentor, and a role model,” said Kris Kellaway, co-owner and general manager of the North Stars, and a former team captain.

“We are deeply grateful for the countless hours he has dedicated to the team and the community. His contributions have no doubt shaped the North Stars organization both on and off the ice.”

DeGagne finished 265-121-20 behind the Thunder Bay bench.

The team has yet to announce DeGagne’s replacement.
