Thunder Bay cricket club three-peats at Timmins tournament

'It's very big for developing cricket in Thunder Bay,' club spokesperson says

THUNDER BAY — A city cricket club is racking up quite a record at a tournament in northeastern Ontario.

The Thunder Bay Lions won their third consecutive title on the weekend at the annual Mayor's Cup cricket tournament in Timmins.

The Lions took the trophy over the host Timmins Tigers, the Sudbury Kings and the Thunder Bay Kombans.

"This is a big success for us, and also for developing cricket in Thunder Bay," said club director Suresh Prajapati.

"When we've posted on social media that we've won the cup, we've got so many inquiries, such as how to play cricket, how to join the club, and so on...It's building up a good community among all of us to develop cricket in Thunder Bay."

The sport's popularity is growing in the city, partly through the efforts of a development program for youth.

The Lions practise and play at their home ground located on Cumberland Street North near the Current River.

The club currently has over 100 registered members, 15 of whom were chosen to participate in the Timmins tournament.

Thunder Bay will host the Northern Ontario Cricket Cup on the weekend of August 9th, with entries expected from across the North including North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, and Sault Ste. Marie.

"It's a very big tournament.  Almost 130 people are travelling here from all over Northern Ontario," Prajapati said.
