THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead District School Board has a new Indigenous student trustee for the current school year.

Alexa Sagutcheway, a Grade 12 student attending Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute, will succeed Hammarskjold student Jesslynn Friday in the role.

In accordance with Ontario legislation, student trustees represent all LDSB students and are responsible for engaging students and bettering the student experience in the school system.

"I believe I can be a part of the positive changes in education...I hope to make a mark in creating a better future in education for the next generations of Indigenous youth by educating others on the issues Indigenous peoples may face and to create improvements where needed," Sagutcheway said in a statement issued by the board.

She previously served as the inclusion and equity representative on Westgate CVI's Student Advisory Council, and co-founded Westgate's Indigenous Student Council.

In addition to school-based volunteer work, she has volunteered with organizations such as the Regional Multicultural Youth Council and Magnus Theatre.

Sagutcheway plans to pursue her post-secondary education in the field of environmental sciences.
