THUNDER BAY — The Sounds of Superior Chorus filled Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute with music during its annual Life in Song concert.
The concert, which supported Faye Peterson House, showcased what the chorus has been working on over the last year. It was held on June 9.
Melissa Cook, assistant director of Sounds of Superior Chorus, said some songs performed have been practiced by the group for years, while others are brand new.
“A lot of our songs are a classic barbershop kind of sound, and we like to integrate modern new hip songs as much as we can to keep our audience captivated,” she said.
The chorus celebrated its 50th anniversary a few years ago.
“Some people have been singing with the chorus for 50, 40, 30 years. I myself am going on 20 years, which is crazy, but it's nice that we've been singing together for so long.
“Some of the newer members have just joined, but when you get a group of women together like that and the sound is perfect, it's like everybody's been singing together for years and with that perfect blend.”
The group has been supporting Faye Peterson House for a number of years, and intend to continue.
“The tickets are free for this event, but the donations were accepted at the door and we donate the money directly to Faye Peterson House.
“It's a cause that's near and dear to our heart. We really believe that women supporting women is a strong value in the community, and we seek to keep doing that when we can and it's our chance to get back to that women supporting women value.”
The audience experienced arrangements of classic songs such as True Colors, Lean On Me and When I Lift My Head Up with about 39 members performing. The concert also included special guest opera singer, Barbara Towell.
Before the intermission the group and guest singer received an overwhelming standing ovation.
“I'm not at all surprised that people jumped to their feet before the intermission came because it's a really great set of music and a great diversity of music between Barb and the chorus.
“You can have your first standing ovation or you can have your 80th standing ovation and it all feels fantastic. Applause from the audience is always something that we look forward to and it means that they're really getting the messages that we're putting across and being touched by the craft that we're delivering, so it's always a huge plus for sure,” Cook said.
