Boys of summer

It always seemed during the first week of school, some teacher wanted to know how I spent my summer vacation. Sometimes it was even in French. Fortunately, it’s an essay I no longer have to write.

It always seemed during the first week of school, some teacher wanted to know how I spent my summer vacation. Sometimes it was even in French. Fortunately, it’s an essay I no longer have to write.

But somehow, at the end of every spring, I start to think.  How do I want to spend my summer?

Last year, I considered my time with Under the Dome’s Barbie and decided I can’t commit to a guy who doesn’t get out much.  So I’m considering my options for 2014.

Reckless is a new legal drama starting on Sunday, June 29 starring Cam Gigandet.  The name may not mean much now but his pecs might be another story in a few months.

He plays a smooth, smart, South Carolina lawyer who fortunately, takes off his shirt periodically. Here’s hoping this continues.

The Night Shift has been a pleasant surprise with the handsome Eoin Macken in a starring role. (The former Irish model’s name is pronounced “Owen.”) The characters are likeable and the stories interesting.  Plus, Macken plays a former army doctor. And as they say, if you can’t stand behind your troops, you ought to get out in front of them.

John Malkovich did something surprising this year. He came to television.

As the dreaded Blackbeard on Crossbones, he’s not the pirate viewers expect. He’s more. And while Malkovich has obviously aged over the years, he’s developed a sexy, smoldering side to his quirkiness. Ironically, he also looks less like a serial killer now.

Unforgettable is finally returning which means I can get my Dallas Roberts fix. His moments on The Good Wife as Alicia’s brother were never enough for me. Now, he’s got a starring role and I can sit dreamily waiting for his next punchline. I do love a man who can tell me off eloquently.

ABC’s Taxi Brooklyn is one of the most improbable dramas not based on science fiction of the summer.  Chyler Leigh – formerly “Little Grey” of Grey’s Anatomy – is back on television as a cop.

But it’s her “partner” in the form of a cab driver who steals my heart.  Jacky Ido is the Paris-based actor who helped kill Hitler in Inglourious Basterds. He’s also a musician who speaks English, French and German. Please tell me we can keep him.

And finally, I’m going to meet Greg Poehler.  If the name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s Amy’s brother.  He’s starring (and writing) the comedy Welcome to Sweden about a guy who gives up everything to follow his love to, well, Sweden.

Originally, I was concerned it would be a stereotype-filled poke at my family ancestry. But it’s based on his own life and is shot mainly in Sweden with Swedish actors.  So I’m carefully optimistic about this guy.

For me, summer is about trying new things and meeting new people.  OK, so some of them are a little out of my league.

But a girl can dream. And this summer, I’m dreaming big.
