Fall Racing Brings Strong Winds and Single-Digit Temps

Last night’s event blasted the fleet with true autumn conditions. While sailors knew it was coming—this time of year always delivers—the first shock of single-digit temperatures still hit hard. With the mercury dipping below 7°C, foul-weather gear was the uniform across the fleet as crews worked to stay warm on the water.

The darkened skies carried strong winds that kept skippers on edge. Gusts often surged an extra 10 knots, testing boat handling and nerves at the helm. This is officially shoulder season for yacht racing in Thunder Bay: shorter days, heavier air, and a fiercer edge to every start. Yet teams continue to push, with points standings tight and every race mattering more than the last.

The night wrapped up with a thrilling three-boat dash to the line, where Bella squeaked out their first win of the season. Straight Jacket continued their consistent run, while Air Aurora claimed line honours in C fleet.
