Last week, Thunder Bay sent seven alpine athletes to the U16 and U14 Ontario Cup Series, representing Northwestern Ontario’s Lake Superior Division Alpine (LSDA). Coached by Douglas Robinson and Geneviève Fortin of the Thunder Bay Franco Alpine Ski Team (TBFAST), the athletes trained hard all winter at local ski hills to prepare for the provincial championships hosted at clubs in Collingwood, Ont. and Camp Fortune, Que.

TBFAST U16 boys (Rowan Jones, Mason Flye, George McGregor, Josef Burkhardt and Charles Hurdon) made a solid showing in a field of the 90 top male alpine skiers in the province, racing Super G, slalom and giant slalom. TBFAST U14 skiers also had a solid showing for Thunder Bay in their first provincial championship, with Ayla Putkuri among the female athletes, and Orran Nichols, whose results placed him among the top male athletes qualifying for the U14 Can-Am race.

The three youngest TBFAST skiers also represented LSDA at the Devils Glen Mastermind Invitational, where Ella Nichols dominated the podium, winning first in her category in both giant slalom and slalom, and Reid Jones took home a bronze in giant slalom. These athletes went on to compete in the Muskoka Rodeo Invitational, where Reid Jones skied his way to first place in the slalom event.
