As the story goes, the Mayor’s Cup began in the year 2000. This annual pursuit race is held inside the breakwall, with shipping lane buoys serving as waypoints. In a pursuit race, each boat has a staggered start time based on its handicap, making the finish a true race to the line—first boat across wins.
This year, Mayor Ken Boshcoff was on hand to send the fleet off—his second time doing so. Fittingly, he was also the first mayor to marshal the race back in its inaugural year.
Uncertainty loomed over this year’s event, with thunderstorms and heavy rain dominating the afternoon forecast. Despite the conditions, race officials made the call to proceed, anticipating that the worst would pass shortly after the scheduled start.
The first hour tested every sailor’s patience, as light wind, steady rain, and fog made for a grueling stretch. But perseverance paid off. The wind eventually filled in late in the race, setting the stage for an exciting finish. Gong Show crossed the line first, earning line honours.
