Bay Credit Union flips burgers in support of Camp Quality

The barbeque on Thursday was one of two barbeques Bay Credit Union holds for charity each year.

THUNDER BAY – Burgers, hotdogs and smokies were served up at Bay Credit Union's barbecue on Thursday, in support of a camp for kids facing serious illnesses.

Organizers set out to raise between $1,000 and $1,500 for Camp Quality.

“Camp Quality is a volunteer run organization and essentially . . . we take children who are experiencing cancer or have had cancer in the past, blood disorders, anything like that, as well as their families, and we bring them to a summer camp,” said Camp Quality fundraising coordinator Keenan Stoger.

“The most recent years it's been wilderness adventure out at Shebandowan. We take them out there, do lots of fun games, take them fishing, go on boat rides, go swimming every day and just basically have as much fun as we can,” he added.

The barbecue caught the attention of many people driving down Algoma Street.

“The hamburgers are a hot commodity today. So apparently last year it was it was the sausages, but we flipped over this year," said June Gaw, director on the board of Bay Credit Union.

Gaw said Camp Quality has touched her family’s life personally, and brought the idea forward.

“We're really happy Keegan came. He's been helping us out and we know that the money they get will go to good use.

“We are a local credit union and we strive to support local charitable organizations. That's our mandate,” she said.

The barbecues his one of two the credit union runs each year.

“We have one in June and one in September. One at this branch on Algoma and one at our Cumberland branch in September,” she said.

Bay Credit Union has been holding barbecues that support charities for around 15 years, she added.

“We're just so thankful. Thank you, Thunder Bay, for coming out and supporting our barbecue here at Bay Credit Union in support of Camp Quality.

“It is so important that we continue to do it because there is such a need out there.”
