Let's Eat: Misty Creek Homestead

Misty Creek Homestead offers local, farm-raised beef in O'Connor Township

Misty Creek Homestead has operated in O’Connor Township since 2019. Carolyn and Mike Huber both come from farming backgrounds. After meeting in Southern Ontario they made the move to Northwestern Ontario to pursue their dream.

The land has historically been a farm for over a century.

“We were fortunate enough to establish a relationship with the previous owners,” Carolyn says.

The property was formerly a dairy farm, and switched to raising beef cattle until the early 1990s.

“The original log buildings, with precise dovetail corner joints, are still standing and have a deep history in the community. Someday we plan to restore them, to preserve the history and truly recognize the hard work of the previous owners. We are doing a lot of construction and rebuilding, there’s a lot of work to be done restoring and updating the equipment and the property.”

“We put a lot of care into raising the cattle, without the use of added growth hormones and ensure they live the utmost best life possible," Mike says. "Part of the feeding ration contains spent grain from local breweries such as Lakehead Beer Co. and Dawson Trail Craft Brewery, as well as forage, hay and grain that we harvested during the summer months.”

With their new website up and running, buying local beef products has never been easier. Varieties of cuts such as, porterhouse steak, rib steak, T-bone steaks, tenderloin, sirloin roast, ground beef, soup bones and more. Everything is individually vacuum packed and labelled. They also offer ready to eat products such as, garlic ring, smokies, pepperettes and other beef based snacks. Perfect for the next charcuterie board — and they offer that too.

Can’t decide which cut to buy? Misty Creek also offers sampler boxes, starting with the Rancher Sample Box with one-eighth beef in bulk (40 pounds of mixed beef cut) all the way up to the Whole Beef — which is approximately 440 pounds of meat.

Mike and Carolyn work alongside a professional butcher. All the meat is processed in a provincial inspected abattoir. They strive for as little waste as possible. This collaboration allows us to provide you with the best quality, locally raised meat. As they like to say “From our gate, to your plate,” and supporting local farmers and will allow people to really taste the difference.

Orders placed on their website can be picked up at their farm store. They also offer convenient delivery within Thunder Bay city limits.

Carolyn and Mike are aware of the growing social concern over ethical farming and encourage customers to visit their store that’s located right on the farm.

“With a little bit of notice we’re happy to give people a tour,” Carolyn says.

“It’s important that we show people where the food actually comes from. Somebody, probably a farmer, worked long hours to grow the meat that’s on your plate, it began way beyond the styrofoam tray at the grocery store.” Mike says.

The owners are knowledgeable about every stage of the process, and they are enthusiastic to guide people in the right direction.

“We’re happy to talk to people, answer any questions you have about options for different cuts and what works best for your cooking style.”

Their offerings will vary depending on the season, Misty Creek’s Facebook page, Instagram, and informative website shows the most up to date availability. Farm fresh eggs are also available. They also collaborate with Stonewall acres who offer seasonal farm fresh vegetable shares, when selecting a bi-weekly vegetable share you also have the option of adding a beef share. Get your vegetables and local beef all in one package.
