In response to the editorial “Mayor getting taste of political reality” (March 04, 2011): if only the mayor and council would echo Republican Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin who said: “While families across this (city) were focused on making ends meet, the (city) government continued to grow well beyond taxpayers’ ability to pay. But the time has come to make the tough choices necessary to put our (city) back on the path to prosperity.

“We must work together to bring our spending in line with reality. We were elected – not to make the easy decisions to benefit ourselves – but to make the difficult ones …”

Smart city politicians should be taking notes.

Basically we have a service sector economy here, and I don’t think it can sustain itself with the private sector paying the taxes to sustain the public-sector employees.

For feedback on this budget, I say cuts are in order.

“Sometime, somehow, someone has to say no.”

The entitled public sector, cops too, albeit kicking, yelling and crying, have to be brought to a point of reality.

Like it or not, the public sector has grown obese and arrogant.

God help us because those in charge sure won’t.

Unfortunately municipal budgets do not lend themselves to a vote of no confidence in council from citizens that can spark an election.

So either reduce this budget or let us call an election.
