On Monday, Canada celebrates its 146th birthday.

It`s been a roller-coaster ride these past 12 months, with plenty of highs, but far too many lows.

Who can forget the pride we felt as Cmdr. Chris Hadfield tweeted out his amazing view of the world from the International Space Station?

For all the senate scandals, gas-plant cancellations, NHL lockouts and the Rob Ford brouhaha that made a mockery out of Canadian politics, there`s plenty to like about the goings on of the past 12 months.

There was Rosie MacLennan`s Olympic gold and Christine Sinclair`s inspired performance in London, and Patrick Sharp`s Stanley Cup win Monday night.

Locally,?MPP?Michael Gravelle appears to be winning his battle against cancer, which we can all be thankful for. We could still use an answer on the conversion of the Thunder?Bay power generating station.

But the best news of all, of course, the Toronto Maple Leafs made the playoffs.
