The weather outside has been mighty frightful this past week or so.
And while there does appear to be some relief in sight next week – if you consider the -7 C temperatures forecast as relief – please take precautions when heading outside.
With wind chills hitting as low as -45 C this week, it would only have taken 10 minutes for exposed skin to start freezing.
Dress appropriately for the weather, should temperatures continue to sink, and make sure you wear your clothing in layers.
Health Canada advises wearing synthetic or wool clothing, as they provide better insulation.
Don’t underestimate the importance of gloves, scarves and toques and if you happen to get wet, change your clothing as soon as possible, as you lose heat when you’re wet.
Keep moving when outdoors, as that will keep the blood flowing and if necessary, seek shelter until weather conditions improve.
Avoid alcohol when heading out into the cold, which contrary to popular belief, can actually lead to hypothermia and make you think you feel warm even though you are really losing heat.
Make sure you have emergency supplies and a blanket in your vehicle in case you get stuck.
Most importantly, pay attention to the weather forecast.
