Is the fourth time the charm for the Lakehead Thunderwolves??
With Carleton in the way, the entire field is probably a 15-point underdog heading into this weekend’s CIS Final 8 men’s basketball championship.
But while Lakehead has gone one-and-done the past three years, don’t count them out of the medal round in 2013.
Sure, they drew the seventh seed and will face a tough Cape Breton Capers team, ranked second in the nation.
But on paper, at least, it’s a team the Wolves match up well against. The Capers, who rolled through most of the season undefeated, aren’t an exceptionally tall team.
If the Wolves can keep AUS MVP James Dorsey at bay, and they’ve proven this season they can lock down some of the top talent in the OUA, they stand a chance to win.
After that, it’s anyone’s game.
The Thunderwolves, particularly Joseph Jones, are playing with the knowledge that this weekend is the last for six of their own.
Win or lose, Greg Carter, Yoosrie Salhia, Matt Schmidt, Brendan King, Ben Johnson and Jones deserve a standing ovation, and a lengthy one at that. Together with coach Scott Morrison, and former players like Jamie Searle, they’ve turned this basketball program around. Recruits now seek the city out. Here’s hoping this is just the beginning of good things to come.
