Thankfully, it’s still around, allowing the movie buffs among us to see, on the big screen, a wide variety of films that never made their way to Thunder?Bay.

One of the drawbacks of living in a city of this size is that many critically acclaimed films are deemed not big enough a draw to make it worthwhile bringing to the city.

Many films take weeks on end to eventually arrive, usually needing the buzz of an Oscar nomination or Golden Globe win to convince decision-makers to take a chance.

Look at Lincoln. It was up for 12 Academy Awards, yet it took months for the film to arrive at Silver City.

The North of Superior Film Association does a great job showcasing these hidden gems throughout the year.

The annual film festival, which fought tooth and nail to find a home after the Cumberland cinema went out of business, is the culmination of all that work.

This year’s titles include The Impossible, Chasing Ice, Hitchcock, Hyde Park on Hudson, Queen of Versailles, Rust and Bone and best-picture nominee Amour, to name just a few.

Tickets remain affordable, just $30 for six films for NOSFA members. Membership is just $10. It’s a bargain at any price.
