Editorial: Fire crews on our minds

Our thoughts continue to be with the firefighters who are battling the forest fires sweeping across the region.

For anyone who hasn’t seen these fires, it might be difficult to understand just how bad the situation really is. More than 615,000 hectares of land has burned. While that’s a lot, it is still difficult for many of us to imagine just how much area that really is.

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed just how bad the situation really was as officials announced for the first time this year they were calling in help from our American neighbours.

“We have arrangements with our neighbourhood states of Minnesota and Wisconsin,” said Art Osborne, an MNR information officer.

“This is the first time that we made a request and the first time that they have been able to respond.”

So how bad is the situation? Very.

Today, brave men and women from across the province, country and now the U.S. states that border us are risking their lives to try to stop these fires.

Saying a simple ‘thank you’ to these firefighters is obviously not enough.

But as we sit in our homes – most of them safe from the fires – and wait for the next forest fire update from the ministry, the best we can offer is that ‘thank you’ and hope for their safety as the fight against these fires continues.
