Editorial: Let voters have their say

Even the Liberals must be suffering from sticker shock. Last week it was revealed the final cost of the cancellation of two southern Ontario gas plant projects would cost taxpayers $1.1 billion.

In what should be an era of unprecedented fiscal restraint, this type of government waste cannot be tolerated.

It’s time for Premier Kathleen Wynne and her party to answer for the sins of the past and let voters have a say on who should lead the province out of this mess.

Here in Northwestern Ontario alone there’s too much at stake to be throwing away this kind of cash.

Think about what that kind of money could mean for the region. For starters, it would more than cover the cost of the natural gas conversion of the Thunder?Bay Power Generating Station. Add in $106.1 million more and the city would have its event centre paid for lock, stock and barrel.

Perhaps another $100 million or so could alleviate the alternative level of care crisis at Thunder?Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.  Spend another $200 million or so to acclerate the twinning of the Trans Canada.

That still leaves $300 million or so in the kitty to help cover infrastructure needs throughout the region. Or hey, just don’t spend it and give taxpayers a well-deserved break.

Ontarians deserve answers and the time for an election is now.
