EDITORIAL: Lots to do in summer

Last weekend four major events took place in the city, and almost all of them boasted higher attendance numbers than the year before.

Shoppers lined Frederica Street on Saturday in search of deals at the Westfort Street Fair. More than 2,300 runners hit the Boulevard Lake trails for the inaugural Run or Dye five-kilometre run.

A day later, with summer finally on the loose, attendance was up at the 122nd offering of the Murillo Fall Fair. And all weekend long barbecue fans flocked to the OLG Casino parking lot for a sampling at the second annual Rib Fest, where early estimates suggest attendance was up over the 25,000 or so who visited in 2012.

There was plenty of cross over at each event. In some cases it was easy to tell – many people didn’t even bother to wash the dye off themselves or their clothes before heading to the next one.

It’s proof positive the city is fully capable of handling several events at the same time.

And while each of this past weekend’s events seemingly catered to different groups, it showed if the quality is there, people aren’t afraid to take in more than one event in a single day or over the course of the weekend.

Hopefully this leads to even more events next summer.
