Editorial: Peterson's possibility

Thunder Bay voters wanted change, and they got it. Mayor Lynn Peterson paid the price. Peterson, the lone candidate seeking her same seat to lose in Monday’s municipal election, will hand over the reins of power to Mayor-elect Keith Hobbs on Dec. 6.

But is that the end of Peterson’s political career?

An interesting scenario could be presenting itself, thanks in part to another development on Monday night.

Ken Boshcoff, the two-time Liberal MP, and current federal nominee in Thunder Bay-Rainy River, was swept back onto council in resounding fashion.

Boshcoff, who was coy during the campaign about his plans, has since said in all likelihood he’ll give up the nomination and focus on municipal matters.

With the federal Conservatives and Liberals playing the public opinion poll waiting game, an election could come at at any given moment.

Without a candidate in place, should Boshcoff abdicate his spot, choosing Peterson would automatically give the Grits a fighting chance in the riding taken away from them three years ago by the NDP’s John Rafferty.

A well-known Liberal supporter, Peterson has been rumoured to be considering the provincial or federal route for some years.

She’s down, but not out by any means.
