At about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, brace yourselves for the cheer heard ‘round Thunder?Bay.

Yup, it’s that time of year again.

Wednesday marks the unofficial end of summer, as kids and teachers alike head back to the classroom.

Can winter be far behind?

For some youngsters, it will mark the start of an educational journey that will shape the rest of their lives.

For others, entering Grade 12, it’s their last year of high school, a milestone and turning point in their young lives.

Education is the key to our future, it’s been said. Never more so in our city’s history has this been true.

Where once students left high school and went to work at the mills or the grain elevators, now more than ever there’s another step to take to find a good-paying job.

That step is a post-secondary education.

As Thunder Bay migrates economically from a resource-based community to a researched-based one, those who have a well-rounded education stand a far better chance to land those jobs and remain close to family and friends.

With the arrival of Confederation College’s REACH building and the arrival of a law school at Lakehead University, that education can be had closer to home as well.

That’s welcome news for everyone.
