Editorial: Spin cycle in full gear

Politicians aren’t the most trusted lot out there.

But for the most part, they mean well.

Their handlers, however, are a completely different story at times, especially during election season.

Take the Conservative Party of Ontario, for example. On Tuesday the provincial body’s public relations arm sent out a news release accusing a junior Liberal minister of “confirming” his party would roll out a carbon tax if re-elected on Oct. 6.

The only problem is, Dave Levac never said the words.

What he said, according to the email sent out by the Conservatives themselves, is the Liberals will evaluate the idea before making a decision.

There’s a big difference.

Political spin has been around since the time of Caesar, but these days, with so much information out there, and much of it unsubstantiated, it’s hard to disseminate the truth from fiction.

Voters must be careful just what information they digest, because those spin doctors know all it takes is a couple of bloggers to run with something and all of a sudden fiction becomes fact.
The Liberals and NDP are equally guilty of these tactics.

But it’s time they stop. Present your facts and let the public decide based on merit, not which party is able to hoodwink the most people with lies and taking opposition words out of context.
