Editorial: survey says turbines OK

According to a poll produced for Horizon Wind Inc., more than two-thirds of city residents are in favour of the Toronto-based company’s planned wind farm project slated for the Nor’Wester Mountains.

Surveying 100 people from each of the city’s seven wards over four days, beginning on May 4, the survey, conducted by Pollara, shows 70 per cent in favour and 25 per cent against it.

Not surprisingly 59 per cent of residents living in Neebing Ward oppose the $75-million project, which if approved would see 18 turbines erected on the mountain range.

Already the main opposition group is calling foul.

Margot Freitag says sampling 700 people in a city of 100,000 isn’t nearly enough.
However, at some point reality has to set in.

Assuming the poll numbers can be trusted, it appears most of the city is OK with turbines being placed on the mountain range.

Unless Neebing Ward residents want to try their hand at seceding from the City of Thunder Bay, the will of the people has spoken loud and clear.

Calling for plebiscites does nothing but add to the tax bill, and likely won’t change the overall opinion of the city’s residents. Ultimately this is a project that is going to go ahead.
