EDITORIAL: The best man won

The American voter has spoken.

The American voter has spoken.

Despite the fear-mongering of the Tea Party and calls by Republican nominee Mitt Romney that the economy was irreparably broken, President Barack Obama was re-elected in a landslide Tuesday night, taking both the electoral college and the popular vote.

Now, after two years of constant campaigning, it’s time for both sides to get down to the business of returning the United States to its former glory.

Obama is the man best suited for the job. Republicans, though fiscally responsible, at least in their own minds, are a party of division, a party that takes into consideration only the wealthy and their toys.

The Democrats are a more inclusive party, which showed in the breakdown of their votes, coming largely from women, Latinos and African Americans.

Republicans should take that message to heart. America’s demographics are not about to sway in their direction anytime soon.

But Obama and the Democrats must also practice the art of compromise as well over the next four years, as U.S. voters are fickle. Just ask Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush.

Obama has a mandate, albeit a lesser one, but now must become a man of action, scaling back U.S. military might and finding ways to drastically cut spending before the money runs out, if it isn’t already too late.
