Hammarskjold only accessible school for special needs students: parent

Open letter to Lakehead Public School board chair Deborah Massaro:

I feel it is necessary to voice my concerns regarding this situation due to the fact that I have a special needs child in grade 9 at Hammarskjold High School.

I want you to be aware of all the advantages of the location of Hammarskjold High School compared to Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute considering that SCVI does not have a special needs program in place to accommodate our children.

Hammarskjold High School is central and accessible to our children that are enrolled in the special needs classroom. Our children participate in co-operative education and life skills in the community.

These community outings and cooperative placements are easily accessed by walking to many of these establishments.

Our appreciated businesses located on Red River Road help our children to learn in the everyday environment to obtain the proper skills to achieve full-time employment.

Without these experiences our children would not have the opportunity like others to experience and to achieve future employment.

Now pertaining to integration- it took my son two months of his last elementary school year to integrate into Hammarskjold High School.

How do you expect my child and other children to integrate into a school that is not established with a special need class?

Sincerely,
Tereza Biloski
