Food is fine
To the editor:?
I read the Oct. 24 issue of Thunder Bay Source and felt I had to comment on the letter to the editor “South side a mess” by Erika Fitzgerald.
I can’t agree or disagree on the state of the beds at Shelter House, because I’ve never been in that area of the building. But I can and do disagree with her comment that says “The meals are inedible a good portion of the time.”
I, and several others from our church group, volunteer at Shelter House on the first Thursday of each month, to prepare, cook and serve the afternoon meal.
We prepare the best meal that we can with what ingredients we are provided with, and our lead, Marlene, does a great job of making a decent flavourful meal from what she has to work with. Meat, being the most expensive ingredient, is usually not available in large quantities as often as are fresh ingredients like onions, carrots and other vegetables but potatoes are usually in good supply.
I have been personally involved in preparing meals such as homemade split pea soup with ham, hamburgers, roast turkey, Swedish-like meatballs and several others.
Desserts are usually a variety of sliced cakes or homemade fruit salad or the like.
All ingredients we use for these meals are donated by local businesses or individuals, and I’ve seen great fresh zucchini and other vegetables coming in lately from home gardeners.
As far as Victoriaville, I would have to deal with that topic in a separate letter, because I’ve lived here most of my life, and a good portion of it in the south end of the city, and I’ve never agreed with the construction of this “white elephant” that is Victoriaville.
