To the editor:
I do wish celebrities would get the facts before shooting off their mouths.
Fact No. 1: The spring bear hunt was cancelled by Mike Harris for political reasons. If it is restored it simply wipes out his mistake.
Fact No. 2: The reason that the spring bear hunt is being reinstated is not political. Northern Ontario has been calling for the spring bear hunt to be resumed because of the danger of bear attacks.
Countless pets have been killed and bears have been invading our towns. Before some bleeding-heart weighs in with, 'Don't live where the bears are,' our towns have been in existence for as long as those in southern Ontario.
Some started as settlements during the fur trade. There was never much of a problem with bears until the cancellation of the spring bear hunt.
We do not leave our garbage out and our barbeques are not any dirtier than the average barbeques anywhere.
We have had them in our yard and there was not a trace of food for them. They were just on the prowl.
Fact No. 3: Hunters don't shoot mothers with cubs.They shoot male bears.
More cubs are killed by an overpopulation of male bears than are left to starve when a mother is killed. Male bears kill any cub they come in contact with. Lions and other animals do it too. It all has to do with spreading their own genes around. Bob Barker needs to look to his own backyard and leave our country alone. He needs to get some knowledge before he shoots his mouth off. It just makes me livid when so called celebrities think they know something when in reality they know nothing at all.
