To the editor:
I recently phoned for a taxi and asked the operator for a child’s car seat. I?was informed they didn’t have any, and what they did have was illegal.
I had no choice, so I orderd the taxi and strapped my four-year-old greatgrandson into the seat.
When I arrived home I was wondering what would have happened if the police had stopped the taxi? So I phoned police to ask.?I was told that taxi companies are under obligation to provide car seats.
I asked if we were stopped who was responsible for the fine. I was told the driver should be, as he should not have let me enter his taxi without a car seat.
Can you imagine a person carrying a car seat to a doctor and other appointments, or grocery shopping?
So then I?phoned another taxi company to see if they had car seats and they said they had one. When I mentioned what police told me, the dispatcher disagreed and said I, the person responsible for the child, would be responsible for the fine. That is their company policy.
Now, what is the law? Who is responsible for the fine? What do parents or caregivers do if they need a taxi??
