Letter: Changes are needed

To the editor:

I am writing in response to two articles in the most recent TB Source.

The first entitled “Horwath reveals northern platform” reports on the NDP platform intended to create more jobs in our area by processing our natural resources locally.

Ms Horwath also announced that the Forest Tenure Modernization Act would be repealed to ensure local communities have more control over our natural resources.

While the Liberal government believes they achieved this, the second article “Global Sticks getting wood from the U.S.”  seems to raise a question about that.

While we are very pleased to have a new business in our area that is producing value added products from our forest, why is it that they can't buy wood from our local people?

I know quite a few forestry workers who can't find a market for our local wood. They are struggling to make ends meet.  And here is a business that wants to buy local but the provincial rules seem to be getting in the way.

We need a change.  We need a better way to develop our economy and our natural resources in a sustainable way that benefits our local citizens.

If elected in the upcoming provincial election, I will work with you to create that vision.

Thunder Bay-Superior North
NDP candidate
