To the editor:
Could someone explain how the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service can assume the powers of the Governor In Council and declare an amnesty?
Apparently the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service has more power than the Parliament of Canada and the Governor in Council.
When they declared that amnesty they stepped beyond discretionary powers of a police officer and are operating independently of the Firearms Act and Criminal Code of Canada.
The gun seizures during the Slave Lake Fire and the High River Flood come to mind.
If the police agencies in Canada have no respect for the rule of law and the Senate in Canada has no respect for “The Rule of Law” then what sort of example is that to set for the citizens.
If an amnesty is declared by police (who assume the power of the Governor in Council) in one area of Canada then it could be argued that the law is not of value in any area of Canada.
The law is not like an electric light, turned on and off at the whim of those who enforce it.
