I would like to respond to Jeff Labine’s story “3 month old pup allegedly clubbed.” I have the following comments to make.

To comment on Inspector Clancy Martin’s remarks that Candy was merely a random stray dog picked up in the bush is not true.

Candy ran into the bush after being struck and was retrieved by the same person that called me seeking help.

I went to this individual’s house to pick up Candy and was told that she had been hit with a golf club.

A surrender form was signed by her owner (I did not want him to have any rights to her ever). I met this person myself and he signed the surrender form. The reason he wrote for surrender was “lack of funds.”

Candy was never running at large. Candy sought refuge in the bush to get away from the hands that abused her.

Second comment, no one’s emotions were running high. They are now, but not then. There is no fabrication in my story.

Clancy is welcome to talk to Dr. Smith at Northwestern Veterinary Hospital and view the x-rays.

Candy’s injuries were significant.  She had a three week old injury to the tibia; the femur was recent.

Her legs had been bound and impression marks can be seen.

What could cause these breaks? A kick, a hit, a whack with a golf club.

It doesn’t matter what she was hit with, the fact that she was injured at the hands of her owner is what I describe as animal abuse.

The fact she had not been treated for her first injury and was malnourished is animal neglect.
I am saddened by Inspector Martin’s lack of care and compassion towards a mistreated pup. His job is to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.
