To the editor:
On March 31, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. -- for those that missed it and apparently most Canadians who were happily living their good lives did -- was 'Earth Hour'.
The green premise for this hour is to sit around in the dark without power (like prehistoric cavemen) and contemplate something, just what I am not sure; perhaps the thought the heat isn't on and they were freezing.
Some of these greens burn parafin candles, which like much of their puzzling envoironmental philosophy, is contrary to their own rationale considering parafin candles are an oil based product(they presumedly despise oil) and more carbon dioxide emmissions are created making and then burning one of these candles than actually just leaving their lights on for this 'Earth Hour'.
To appease my curiosity, I decided to do a quick survey this hour in the neighbourhood.
Of the 62 residences observed, 51(82 per cent) had on lights and appliances while 11(18 per cent) were dark. Considering this was Saturday night and the multitude of functions happening like banquets, weddings, shows, restaurants, night clubs, etc. on Saturday evening in warm, well-lit buidings(not cold damp darkened caves), this(18 per cent was not unexpected. No doubt Canadians should be thankful and appreciate what we have in this country, vast riches of resources to benefit us both economically and socially(through billions in taxes) and make life worth living.
When satellites pass North Korea at night the entire country is in darkness just like it was in the middle ages, in stark contrast to well lit developed nations around it like South Korea!! Why does the so-called green movement want to continually turn back time and have us party like it's 1499 once more with this "Earth Hour' hypochrisy while they enjoy every facet of modern life other than that one hour? Why not an Appreciation' Hour yearly instead?
