LETTER: Event centre not necessary, given crowds

To the editor:

I think this city should take one step forward and a dozen back, I have been at the Dudley Hewitt Cup this week and am disappointed with the crowds.

The host committee from the Thunder Bay North Stars have marketed this event so well, the media has jumped on board, tickets prices are really reasonable and still where are the people. So for those people out there think that a new 5,700-seat event centre is the solution, they should run for council.

What more can this committee do to put people in the stands? Let's look at what council would like to see. A new event centre (to replace the old Fort William Gardens which will be the future site of the new courthouse parking lot; a new bus terminal $8 million in the intercity area -- the current bus barns on Fort William Road has plenty of space on the south side of their property and the city owns it; put transfer spots at Intercity Shopping Centre, City Hall and maybe the casino area.

What will be the cost of the new event centre? What about Phase 2 of the waterfront moneypit project, where is that money coming from?

The city has taken $8.6 Million dollars out of Phase 2 to pay for the over run on Phase 1. Oh Coun. Aldo Ruberto says the public is not smart enough to vote on a site for the new event centre. Maybe we were not smart enough when we voted him in last election. On the Facebook site "Citizens for the downtown core multiplex" Johnny De Bakker said he went to the Dudley Hewit cup last night, got a killer parking spot!

What time did you go to the Game Johnny 4 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. game? I believe we are still Fort William and Port Arthur. How great was it that the city sold the waterfront property after putting $60 million into it. Oh, but Community Services manager Greg Alexander said they would get $1 million dollars back in taxes. Hey Greg I think that will be 60 years to get your money back, great call on that one. We can probably sell off all the golf courses to help pay that off.

Thunder Bay
