To the editor:
For all of you who think that we are being greedy, here is some news. I too, had more than two feet of water in my home. This was where my kitchen and living area was located.
We lost almost everything that was downstairs. I risk infection everytime I walk in my home, as I have had a few infections already in the past year. I did get a bad rash from the sewage water creeping over the rubber boots that I was wearing for protection. I just finished my antibiotics.
My husband had to take two weeks off due to violent nausea and abdominal pain.
To make myself absolutely clear, I am so happy for all of our neighbours who will benefit from the generosity of all of the donations from both the general public and all of the businesses that raised a substancial amount of money. Thunder Bay is second to none when we come together as a community.
Here is my problem: because I do have insurance, this means that I have a $2,000 deductible. I had to ask my adjuster what I have to give up in order to pay for this. My fridge and stove? Once wecomplete our list of contents, we get a whopping 75 per cent of the value of our contents.
What about the 90 year-old curio cabinet that my husband treasured from his grandmother that was busted-up by the clean-up company?
The sad part here is that we pay a large amount of money for insurance all year long. Now, not only is our rates going to skyrocket, the value of our homes have all plummeted. I do realize that the city has done all that they could do to help us out in the aftermath of this desperate situation. However, we are all just human, and it does seem to me that somebody did make an egregious error where the plant is concerned.
