To the editor:

Every day since my family and I moved to Thunder Bay 10 years ago, we have been encouraged by the remarkable caring, generosity and community spirit of our fellow citizens. The season is upon us when we are reminded to be especially thoughtful to our neighbours.

Once again the Thunder Bay Christmas Cheer Fund is appealing for donations so we can continue a long-standing tradition of providing a hamper of food and gifts to families in need in our community.

As in the past, these hampers will contain enough food to feed a family for one week, as well as quality ingredients for a nutritious dinner in the spirit of Christmas.

The hampers come with gifts of candy, clothing and toys supplied by our local professional firefighters through their annual Toys for Tots campaign.

The Christmas Cheer Fund is administered by a citizen’s committee that is supported by several hundred volunteers, who work like energetic elves to sort food donations and assemble the hampers complete with gifts. We do appreciate their efforts.

Due to difficult economic times over the last number of years the financial stress on families has grown dramatically and an increasing number of hampers are required. Last year we fed more than 5,000 people in our community, yet we know there are more who need our help.

It is through our churches, schools, organizations, businesses and above all individuals like you that we help others. Please donate to the Christmas Cheer Fund to ensure that no one in need of food at Christmas goes without.

Please also remember that no child should ever be denied a new toy or warm clothing as a gift to open on Christmas morning.

The need is great and we continue to rely on your generous financial support to offset the cost. Contributions are tax deductible and receipts will be provided for all donations of $5 or more.

Please make cheques payable to Thunder Bay Christmas Cheer Fund and help us to spread the joy of Christmas by dropping off your donations at Quality Market’s Centennial Square and Golf Links Road locations, or at any of Thunder Bay’s Scotia Bank branches.
