To the editor:
I wonder if moving the Centennial Botanical Conservatory to the waterfront or including it in the multiplex has been considered?
This relocation has also been proposed for the art gallery. Surely, the expertise in knowing how to grow and maintain tropical, subtropical and desert plants through a Canadian winter is a rare national achievement -- and it's right here in Thunder Bay.
One of the factors in deciding to move to Thunder Bay was the memory of our visit to the conservatory and the surprise of finding such a gem. Also, after attending a number of wedding ceremonies or wedding pictures sessions there including our own – this would be quite a loss.
Further, the conservatory is a fascinating visit for new immigrants with exotic flowers, trees, shrubs and other plants from around the world. Certainly, visitation and revenues could be increased at the waterfront or a multiplex location.
After all, we seem to be investing a lot in artwork and attractions for Marina Park, however, are proposing the demolition of an exceptional conservatory that would benefit from a new home.
We seem to be willing to spend large amounts to attract condominiums and hotels (that aren't yet happening) while we would lose a horticultural attraction and expertise that is already here. In short – move the Conservatory to the waterfront or include it in the multiplex. Lets keep this exceptional attraction.
