To the editor:
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Katherine Dugmore.
In 2008, while I was a reporter at The Chronicle-Journal, Katherine proved to be of great assistance to me and reporter Peter Burkowski as we put together numerous stories on waterfront construction.
Despite her busy schedule, Katherine found the time and patience to deal with two pesky reporters during numerous interviews in person and on the telephone. This was at a time when city council was dealing with fierce opposition to construction at Prince Arthur's Landing from the Friends of Marina Park and others in the community.
During one particular meeting at The Chronicle-Journal, Katherine and waterfront chairman Mark Bentz faced an onslaught of questions during a two-hour question and answer session in which two reporters asked them to justify spending millions of dollars on a project many in the community opposed.
The responded honestly and were well prepared with facts and information on all aspects of construction from financing to infrastructure. They made it clear that this project would benefit not only the present but future generations much like the waterfront development in the city of Duluth. In all my dealings with Katherine Dugmore I had nothing but the utmost respect for her class and integrity during a difficult and controversial era in the city's history.
