To the editor:

On April 13, 2011, approximately 60 residents from our municipality attended the 3 p.m. (first session) meeting which was held at the MacGregor Recreation Centre.

Canada Post representative stated that they will be changing and adding postal codes in our municipality to assist them in the sorting and delivery process.

The representative also stated that the  proposed change of the postal address from Thunder Bay to Shuniah was not the requirement of Canada Post but was made by the Shuniah council.

Since 1970, for 41 years the postal address for our municipality has been Thunder Bay. The name Shuniah does not exist on any Ontario map nor does it exist on the Global Positioning System.

How can someone who is out of province, or for that matter in the province of Ontario locate an address in Shuniah.

Canada Post also promised to provide each resident in our municipality with 10 free change of address cards. Since Shuniah council have decided to change the mailing address from Thunder Bay to Shuniah, it will be their responsibility to  cover the costs for each resident in our municipality for change of address;  passports, health cards, estate wills, outdoors cards, driver’s licenses, vehicle licenses and any other personal documents that cost money to have the address changed.

Postal name change from Thunder Bay to Shuniah is a very important issue with the rate payers of this municipality.

To prevent any further action, we ask the council of Shuniah to reverse their decision and  allow our mailing address to remain in Thunder Bay.
