Letter: Lakehead responds to sexual assault outrage

To the editor:

This past Saturday’s Chronicle Journal featured a disturbing letter to the editor.

The letter, which I found deeply distressing, speaks to additional pain victims of sexual assault should never experience. While the letter indicates that an incident occurred off campus, the concern of Lakehead University for the safety and well being of our students, faculty, and staff extends beyond our buildings and spaces.

While privacy laws prevent Lakehead from discussing details about any member of our community, the University adheres to all Ontario and Canadian laws, in addition to having our own policies and services that serve to protect people.

In response to the issues raised in the letter, this week I will appoint a Task Force to review the issues raised in the letter and the policies, procedures, training, and support Lakehead has in place and how they might be improved. I will invite members of Lakehead’s senior administration, faculty, staff, and students, as well as members from the local community, to participate. This Task Force will be chaired by Dr. Lori Chambers, Lakehead Professor and Chair of our Department of Women Studies.  Its recommendations will be shared with the public to the extent allowed by privacy laws.

I would like to remind you all that Lakehead University has a variety of services available to assist in times of need, including,
•      Office of the Vice-Provost (Student Affairs)
•      Student Health and Counselling Centre
•      Harassment and Discrimination Coordinator
•      Chaplain
•      Ombudsman
•      Residence Services
•      Security Services

I take the well-being and safety of our students, faculty, and staff very seriously and Lakehead University is committed to providing a safe environment for learning and life.

Dr. Brian J.R. Stevenson
President and Vice-Chancellor
Lakehead University
