LETTER: More democracy, says MP

To the editor:

I value democracy. I have big two concerns about the upcoming debates arranged by NOMA and the Chamber.

First, they must be “All Candidates” and “All Leaders” debates. Each candidate and each party leader should be in front of the electorate explaining their views and those of their party, and answering pointed questions.  I am speaking particularly here about the exclusion of the Green Party candidates in Thunder Bay Superior North and Thunder Bay Rainy River, as well as their party leader.

Small parties have some very good ideas, and they are not afraid to bring them forward! We need to hear from them, especially those that represent parties that are running candidates in all Ontario ridings.

Second, at the local level we need mechanisms to create good access to the democratic process. Charging a hefty admission fee to attend these debates creates a “pay-to-play” atmosphere that excludes many people. We need MORE people engaged in politics… not less. Surely NOMA and the Chamber can find better ways to cover the costs.

NOMA should be inviting Green Leader Mike Schreiner, and the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce should be inviting the two local Green Party provincial candidates. These events should be a “come-one, come all” event – all candidates, all leaders, and all citizens.

Bruce Hyer M.P.
