Letter: Multiplex justified?

To the editor: The red ink isn’t even dry on the Marina Park fiasco and it would seem the steamroller is on course for a new multi-use arena.

We will go through the phony consultation phase of public meetings no doubt filled with construction company shills and council, who seems to have forgotten their concern about high taxes, will fall in lockstep with whatever city management wants.

This is the same city management that has brought us cost overruns at virtually every construction project (perhaps we should get the people from the Italian Cultural Centre to manage these projects).

They have brought us roads that are becoming one big pothole. Boulevard Lake is fast becoming a swamp as it fills in with silt and debris, the mess of the bus terminal, streets that resemble garbage dumps and in the winter, snow banks not cleared, creating hazards for seniors along with roads so poorly plowed they become rutted with ice caused by the excessive salt. And of course let’s not forget the secretive wind farm.

While Fort William Gardens is likely past its prime, what justification do we have for a bigger facility?

Certainly not attendance at sporting events. If we build it, they will come - this isn’t a movie and if it will be so good for business, let them build it. Then at least you could make an argument for giving them the land and a property tax break for a few years.

We can’t afford this facility and we don’t need it and I am puzzled why councillors and city management who are supposed to be working for the citizens of Thunder Bay providing “peace, order and good government” continue to support positions that benefit the few while they are being paid for by the many.
