To the editor:

In the reader’s letter  (Hydro Woes, Dec. 10, 2010), his second last paragraph states that his hydro rate increases are taken directly from Thunder Bay Hydro releases.

I would like to submit another Thunder Bay Hydro release that is sent to every household, that being the bi-monthly billing that the consumer has to pay. Based on this information it would appear that the August/September 2008 billing for 1,000 kilowatt hours would have cost $110. The same billing period in 2010 cost me $153.30, for the same number of kilowatt hours.

This indicates that the hydro rates have increased by 40 per cent in the last two years.
Hydro increases are a fact of life, and I know our Thunder Bay Hydro has to deal with rates and regulations that are laid out by provincial directives, one of which is the Ontario Energy Board. One of the largest recent increases was eight per cent because of the implementation of the harmonized sales tax.

This tax alone will result in a customer using 500 kilowatts a month paying an additional $73 per year based on the current cost of power.
