To the editor:
The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women. In Thunder Bay the campaign is led by a committee of women and men working together.
We are once again approaching Dec. 6, Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Twenty-two years ago on that date 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique were killed by a man carrying a gun. At the Catholic Family Development Centre we are forever counselling victims of the effects of violence against women and the impact on their families.
Many people are aware of the problem, but they may feel helpless to do anything about it. They may feel that what happens in other people’s homes is none of their business. We want to say that violence is everyone’s business, and that your choice to get involved may make the difference between life and death.
In the coming weeks there will be many worthy events run by several different organizations around the city to raise awareness about this issue. We encourage everyone to get involved and make your voice heard. Join together as a city to say, “Our future has no violence against women.”
Catholic Family Development Centre is sponsoring a White Ribbon Campaign beginning on Nov. 25 and finishing on Dec. 6. You’re invited to join us at the Waverly Resource Library Auditorium at 285 Red River Rd. on Nov. 25 at 10 a.m.
In signing a poster condemning violence and wearing a white ribbon you are making a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.
We encourage everyone in Thunder Bay to wear a white ribbon from Nov. 25 to Dec. 6 to support such a pledge. For more information call us at 345-7323 or become a fan of our Facebook Page, “White Ribbon Campaign Thunder Bay.”
