To the editor:

The young boy who was attacked by the dog recently at Tarbutt Park is a truly unfortunate set of circumstances, which could have been avoided.

The public is shocked and the general public with very rightly want to see the guilty party bearing the full force of the legal system. While this tragic event will be centred on the dog owner and suffering of the victim, let us not forget this was an avoidable event.

Bylaws have been in place for quite some time and I applaud the city and Ron Bourret, the enforcement officer, for all the long days, months and years that have been put into establishing reasonable rules for the owners of pets and other animals.

Reasonable pets owners are not the problem. Animal control is an individual responsibility. Sadly we have seen more cases in the city of Thunder Bay, such as this where an unreasonable pet owner cloaks themselves in their freedom to do as they pleas, only to result in a disaster and our young Dante Mekanak suffers.

The public will perhaps get the retribution is seeks amd some will learn from this. However, the lesson we learn is at a high cost and will be resonating with everyone that is touch by this tragic and avoidable event.

Don Skochinski,
Thunder Bay
