To the editor,
I am writing today to thank all the people (golfer and non-golfers) that supported me in my quest to keep Municipal Golf Course open.
Thank you to all the people that signed the petition and to all the people that encouraged Tony Stokaluk, Dennis Halabecki and me in our fight to have city council keep a facility that had been a part of the cities infrastructure for over 80 years. Thank you to Councillors Andrew Foulds, Linda Rydholm, Paul Pugh and Iain Angus for supporting us throughout the process.
The position put forward by the majority of council that closing Municipal was necessary because it was costing money flies in the face of what municipal councils are supposed to do and that is to ensure public services are provided to the citizens of their community.
To claim that a service is not needed because it costs money leads one to believe that all services that a municipality provides that do not make money should be closed. This of course is, to quote Councillor Giertuga, "asinine".
Municipal Golf Course provided a valuable service to thousands of citizens over the past 80 years and could I believe continue to do so at a better rate of return than many other municipal services.
Again, on behalf of Tony Stokaluk, Dennis Halabecki and myself, Thank you to everyone that supported us.
Jules Tupker,
Thunder Bay
