THUNDER BAY — A booming lumber market has prompted Resolute Forest Products to make a major investment which will add dozens of jobs at its Thunder Bay sawmill.

The mill, located on Fort William First Nation, will undergo a $13 million upgrade including a new log and lumber yard, an increase in kiln capacity and an increase in cut-to-length debarking capacity.

The expansion will increase annual production by up to 40 million board feet more than the current capacity of 330 million board feet.

A company spokesperson told TBNewswatch a new shift will be implemented once the work is completed, resulting in 25 new jobs, six yard contractor jobs and additional jobs in woodlands operations.

"This high-return investment is aligned with our efforts to improve the competitiveness of the strongest parts of our business across the market cycle," the spokesperson said.

The project will begin this year, with completion by the fall of 2022.
