THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 16 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Friday, with half of those cases associated with an ongoing outbreak at the Southbridge Roseview long-term care home.

All but one of the cases announced Friday involve individuals in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, which includes Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Gillies, Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and some unorganized territories.

Eight of the local cases are associated with Southbridge Roseview. Another four are considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case. An exposure category had not yet been identified for the remaining three.

The final case announced Tuesday involved an individual in a First Nation in the Thunder Bay District, whose exposure category was listed as “pending.”

There were 109 active cases in the district as of Friday. There had been a cumulative total of 483 cases, including 14 deaths, most of which are associated with the Roseview outbreak.

Southbridge Care Homes reported no new deaths Friday, while active cases were up to 16 residents and 12 staff (from 10 each the previous day).

There were no patients admitted to hospital with the virus as of Friday.

The newly announced cases included 11 women and 5 men, while five of those individuals were at least 80 years old and one was between 70 and 79.

A significant number of the new cases were among younger people, including three under 20, and four between 20 and 29.

Friday’s 16 cases represented the highest single-day total reported since Nov. 29.
