$3 million expansion project begins at Water Street bus terminal

Starting July 14, Thunder Bay Transit will operate a temporary terminal on Cumberland Street.

THUNDER BAY — Transit passengers will use a new location for boarding and disembarking from buses at the waterfront terminal for four months, starting July 14.

While the terminal on Water Street undergoes an expansion and  major renovations, Thunder Bay Transit will set up a temporary site on Cumberland Street between Van Norman and Camelot streets.

That section of Cumberland will be closed to regular traffic, as only buses will be permitted access.

Shelters and benches will be provided, along with signage showing where to catch each route.

When work at the waterfront terminal is completed in mid-November, Thunder Bay Transit said passengers will find it provides improved safety, better accessibility, and greater convenience.

Improvements will include an outdoor canopy to shelter riders from the elements, better lighting and electronic signage, and a new HVAC system.

Manager Brad Loroff has previously stated “The waterfront terminal building itself is well past its end-of-life," and that the renovation will address all outstanding capital issues with the building.

The cost of the project is about $3.2 million.
