THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 33 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, all in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas.

A growing outbreak at the Southbridge Roseview long-term care home accounts for 28 of those cases. The results follow surveillance testing of residents and staff conducted on Nov. 26, the health unit said.

Another five cases unrelated to the outbreak were announced Sunday. Four were considered the result of close contact with an existing case, while one individual was determined to have been exposed through travel outside the region.

Sunday's announcement was the largest single-day jump in cases the health unit has reported since the pandemic reached the Thunder Bay district in March, topping the 21 cases reported on Nov. 17.

There were 94 active cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the Thunder Bay district as of Sunday morning.

The health unit listed two individuals in hospital with the virus Sunday, and none in intensive care.

The overwhelming majority of cases announced in recent weeks have been in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, which as defined by the health unit includes Oliver Paipoonge, Neebing, Gillies, Shuniah, Conmee, O'Connor, and some unorganized territories.

The district has seen a total of 303 cases, resulting in three deaths. Two of those have come in the last week: the virus claimed the life of one man Monday, while the death of a resident at Southbridge Roseview was announced Saturday.
