Residents in the Rosslyn area have a new place to get together and have a good meal.

The Pinegrove United Church on Highway 130 opened Cafe Del Soul Thursday.

The cafe is open to everyone and offers a place for people to come and connect with one another over a meal.

Art and photographs from community members adorn the walls, to create an inviting atmosphere.

Pastor Hubert Den Draak said the meals offered are free, and will be different every time the cafe opens each week, throughout the winter months.

“We realize that there’s a lot of isolation in the rural community,” Draak said.

“When the churches were still the hub of the community, people got together at churches for everything, not just to worship, but also to dance, listen to music, watch a play, find a partner and that fell away.

MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay - Atikokan) said whether you want to call it rural or semi-rural, it’s a bit away from downtown.

“There might be enough people that would have a difficult time to get into the city centre who can avail themselves at the opportunity that is out here.”

Mauro added that organizations and events like this add to the social fabric of the community in Oliver-Paipoonge.
